mercury amounts & repairs

I seem to have been getting a lot of repairs in lately w/ huge amounts of
mercury in them. Some of the units I've seen have the amount of about two
eraser heads or more. These units don't seem more than 8-10 feet.

I'm used to putting in an average of the size of a large pin-head; plus or
minus depending on the size of the unit. I find the literature that I've
read about amounts to only refer to measured amounts and at this time I
don't have a way to measure other than eye-balling it. I do understand
that in this case more is not better, but with the amounts I see some
people putting in, it has made me wonder.

Does anyone have any feedback...?

This also brings up the question of mercury repairs. I have a very, very
money conscious boss that thinks that repairing is cheaper than making a
new unit. While I am very aware of the dangers, he doesn't seem to care
about this. It's hard to refuse to repair them if he's the boss, but I try
as often as I can to make new units. I've given him the rap (my health and
my co-workers), including the wear on the manifold/pump doing mercury
repairs (which also boils down to cost) - he doesn't seem too concerned;
he's a bit from the <OLD> school.

I'd love to hear any feedback on this issue. If anyone has found
themselves in the same position - w/ a boss dictating that they do merc.
repairs. Or if anyone has suggestions for approaching this issue w/ him.
Also any tips on doing merc. repairs if absolutely essential.

Thanks -

NeonThom
