Don - on your cold weather problem: you can experimentally determine if your gas
is the problem. Take a length of the green tubing in question, add 'trodes,
bomb and pump normally, EXCEPT leave out the mercury. Does the finished tube
burn the same redish color? If so, it means it's just too cold for your tubes -
the Hg's not vaporizing or has found a cold spot to hide in. Solution? Maybe
change to 15mm 'trodes and up current to 60ma? Clear 'plex over front of
glasswork to hold in heat? Anybody else have any ideas here?
