Starting out in neon....

Hello,

I'm an artist based in the U.K., and I'm looking to use neon in a few of my creations.

I've been reading up on what's involved. The cost of a new manifold and bombarding transformer is huge for someone starting out in this field so I've decided that I'll use existing neon outlets to fill and bombard my tubes. I've approached some shops and they're fine with this.

My question is this; what sort of glass would you recommend for someone starting out?

I've had no formal training, but I've acquired some DIY videos, and I intend to learn by trial and error. I've spoken with the neon shops near me and they all appear to just hire benders when they have enough work to do. No full time bending staff. No courses to speak of unless I offered to pay through the nose. No courses offered at local colleges either.

The only distributor in the U.K. for neon supplies I've found is called sign-tec, and they offer eurolite or soda clear glass tubes.

Most of the electrodes they sell are either eurolite or lead. I assume you need to match the tube\electrode glass types, or can you mix them?

Thanks.
