Fiberfrax comes in varying densities from soft blanket to hard board.  I 
prefer the soft, though you want to wear a mask when handling it. There is 
also a refractory plaster that can 'tighten' it up.  France Refractory Co 
(there's one here in Long Island City) among others, sells this.  You can 
get quite hot with just a bushy long ribbon-like burner. I've seen them 
handmade by drilling holes in 2" pipe.  You ideally create a manifold for 
the air gas mixture.
