In Response To: Mercury silence (midwestfire)

A 40-year veteran bender who was a mentor to me had a shop with mercury lining the floor from all the spills over the years.

I was careful not to spend more time there than I had to and even (without his knowledge) changed my shoes when I came to his property and carefully bagged them between visits.

The risk of pumping opened merc tubes cannot be overstated since you will be breathing the air being pumped out of them. Some pump those tubes anyway since the client can probably find someone who will.

Without that concern, however, it is dreadfully contaminating to your pumping system so there are two very good reasons to avoid merc repairs.

I have only lost a few jobs to this non-negotiable policy.

With just a few precautions, the dangers of handling mercury are easily overcome.

I read somewhere that mercury salts can evaporate at room temperature, so any exposed mercury will present a dangerous environment.
