I wouldn't call Roots-type (lobe) blowers obsolete. Regens are simpler, but lobe blowers are really more versatile and provide considerably higher pressure. You can mount the blower further away and use a smaller piping.
I think the current BEST choice are the new 2-stage regenerative blowers. You get 4-7psi - and can use 1 inch steel plumbing pipe. Even 3/4in pipe for a small installation.
Another great "newer" technology are the linear piston pumps. These are made by companies like Medo, and I think Gast and Thomas too. They only have 1 moving part - the piston. Long life, very quiet - and the best part: around 100 watts to power a single set of fires. These pumps are popular for use with pond aeration - (koi ponds). Buy from a pond-supplier.
You can greatly reduce your air consumption needs by using a small squirrel cage blower for the ribbon burner. With it's giant 2in intake, it's ideal for this - and you waste a ton of high-pressure air supplying this beast. It's also much quieter than the standard "economizer", and less prone to flash-back.
Take the ribbon burner out of the equation, and you only need a few cfm to supply a crossfire and a hand-torch. Very economically (and quietly) supplied by a linear piston pump.
If going with the 2-stage regenerative... find the smallest one you can. A 1/2 hp unit should easily supply 2 sets of fires.. maybe more.
