I have an old document somewhere on how to set up a diffusion pump, maybe produced by Transco or Voltarc back in the day. I could scan it if anyone wants.
The gist that I recall is: start with the heater low and the backing pump on; let the oil and heater get up to temperature (an hour or so); and then gradually turn up the heater (half a notch per half hour, lets say) until the top ring is just barely warm, or, as Sean said, there is no visible vapor activity.
On the bombarding table, I drilled holes in 2x4's to slide 4' sticks of 15mm clear thru. In retrospect, I should have done notches or larger holes -- the holes are snug enough that I never pull the glass out to clean the table properly.
