Hello Mike!
Welcome to this fascinating craft!
I am on your path for last two years. Some suggestions I have learned:
Be careful with gas - really blows up.
Be careful with mercury - really toxic.
Be careful with bombarder current - really deadly.Do not use silicone hose for gas connections. Silicone leaks some minor amount of gas/or odorant. Likely not dangerous, but constant smell will make you nervous. I am using PVC hose for my crossfire connections. and latex for handtorch. Use good certified gas grade hose for all connections under constant gas pressure - before mixers - and do a check with soap bubble.
Manometer oil is not hydrophyllic, but will adsorb some air when sitting in atmosphere. So when pulling vacuum for the first time, do it in small steps, else oil will bubble and can mess your manifold. If you mess manifold with oil by error, good way to clean it is with isopropyl alcohol. Yes, every novice including me did it at some time ;) Use chemically clean or better grade of alcohol.
Dusty tubes can be cleaned to some degree with running water, even coated ones. Use soft/reverse osmosis/distilled water if possible.
