You don't mention brand names or your pumping procedure for those brands, so it's hard to pinpoint much. In my experience, unless they're really crap electrodes, you shouldn't be seeing this electrode darkening.
It sounds to me like you may be processing at too low a pressure. From what I understand, the carbon buildup you're describing comes from bombarding at too low a pressure at too high a current for too long. Try modifying your bombarding procedure and I don't think you'll find this darkening to be the norm.
