I'd be interested in what two brands you are talking about.

The chemical makeup of the emitter is what was told to me to be the stuff that makes either a staining or sputtering unit vs a clean running unit. Other factors of course are pumping and vacuum and clean Hg and tubing.

On Ar/Hg units I worry about using the best electrode. What is that "best electrode" in 2014 ?

Neon gas filled lamps I don't think it matters so much.
