Sometimes when pumping long tubes I will pull a ultimate vacuum and then back fill with 1/2 torr of my fill gas. This will act as a carrier for the arc and you will still have to open and close as the crap out gasses till you can maintain a good arc.
One thing about pumping with fill gas is that the tube will heat up real slow and the ends will get hotter. than the center.
You can do as I said first with the fill gas then before the tube gets to hot and the junk has all been vaporized you can suck it all out then backfill with air.
Just a easy suggestion. I really wouldn't worry about your system since your pumping shorter tubes or one at a time and it is working fine. Long double tubes are just a matter of tweeking your procedure.
