No, and no. Cheap digital displays don't last long. Better ones do (and have). You learn from mistakes and continually improve the product. I'm sure you do the same.
I have not seen any changes in IR gauge readings/scale after using a bombarder... ever. It tracks the performance of a thermocouple the same, every time. Static buildup inside a grounded NEMA enclosure, and beyond redundant protective circuitry would be very difficult.
