Thanks everybody. I ordered a can of the smoke plasti dip spray from amazon, and will do a test piece. I don't expect great results, but it is worth a try. I like the idea of thinning black silicone, but the spray can seems considerably easier. I agree it would be the perfect coating, but I don't know how well it would thin, and might get pretty costly. If the plasti-dip doesn't do the trick, I will probably drop the whole concept as it really isn't worth the added effort for the amount of signs we do in this particular application. We've made 6 signs for them already, but we always get complaints when they don't have infinite dimming capabilities... what are ya going to do?

I did some poking around on the web, and it seems the plasti dip is used to black out tail lights by some modern 'hot rodders.' They have had mixed results as to it's effectiveness, but some folks don't know how to work a rattle can. I guess I will just have to try it out.
