Alro is a large (giant) distributor. They often don't like to deal with small quantities of cheap stock, and probably were trying to sell you a bundle (hundreds of feet) or something specialty. Try to find out who they sell to in your area (every supplier around me buys from Alro; Alro will sell direct, too, but the pricing is different enough to base a business off of.) If Alro won't recommend someone, call fab shops and ask.

Hot rolled comes in 20' lengths, which is why having the bolt cutters in advance will make it easier to load in your vehicle without being charged for cutting it. I think I paid about $5 for 20' last week.

In thinking about it, I like Chris's point on buying the cold rolled and spending less time wire brushing it. A bench grinder with a wire wheel makes it go fast, though.
