Your torches will eat up oxygen, so you need to be sure you get plenty of fresh air.
I'm sure I would regularly hit an 8ft ceiling, thus ruining the bend/tube.
I would be VERY weary of bringing mercury into my home.
If anything, I would recommend just getting some torches, and bending up the tubes. You could then bring them to a neon shop to have them pumped. I've done it for a few "former" benders in the past. As long as it's just for hobby, I'm sure they wouldn't see it as competition. The nice thing with this is that you can buy the glass from them too, so you don't need boxes and boxes of different colors.
