Finger "condom's" like medical personnel use. Available in various sizes and cheap.

I never worried about not painting the electrodes. Use 45mA electrodes on 30mA transformers and you have a cushion if the electrodes operate a little warmer.

I dip the wires too. When the paint gets tacky use your finger nails to scrape it off. If you wait until the paint dries use a wire insulation stripper. Quick and easy.
