school me on lead free

I just recently started using lead free glass. One of my suppliers is going strictly lead free.

Forgive my ignorance, but why now? What are the pros & cons of it. I've noticed it's harder & takes longer to heat. I see this causing problems with the setup I'm used to. I also read about it not turning black, I confirmed this by turning the air down & scorching a piece of old vs. new but don't see the relevance.

Anyway, I'm curious to know what the differences are & why my supplier is switching. Any info would be great, or any links to articles, etc.
