In Response To: Grounding Electrodes (Dana)

As far as whether you would want to create a controlled flashback: Seeing it fall away after the tube begins to heat and maintain the arc properly is part of the visual process of bombarding for me.

When I was learning about flashbacks in the bombarding process in the beginning, it caused a lot of apprehension. After seeing a grounding electrode in action, I have seen the value of being able to monitor this bleed-off of the arc stream while at the beginning of the bombarding phase when a flashback is most likely to happen due to the resistance of the tube.

In any event, I still practice extreme caution and close all valves while the high voltage is on. A few old timers I have observed bombard leave everything open, including the vacuum gauge sensor-of course not everyone has their sensor behind a stopcock either.
