Just use 1/8 x 1/2 - it's standard stock in any steel yard. It also provides a larger surface for the tube-support bases, is easier to drill holes in, doesn't warp as much when you weld it, etc.

I would also recommend HOT ROLLED. Cold rolled is more expensive, and has a nicer finish... but it is more brittle if cold-worked, and will break more easily when you bend it than hot-rolled. I've tried both many times. Just get hot rolled. Dirt cheap and works so nicely.

The end-caps are standard stock items at McMaster Carr hardware. Google them - the product you want it item number 85945K27. Fits 1/8 x 1/2.
