Hello all, I’m in Lebanon. And I’m a neon specialist for about 20 years. LED has started rushing its way in here too, taking about 50% of the channel letters where we used to light them with neon.
We should all confess that there is demand for LED, it is something new for the customer, and they would like to try it. But nothing can replace neon, specially exposed neon signs, artistic sculptures and of course cold cathode decorations, which I am planning to get into it to fill the void of LED
Regarding the topic about Mark from SVP, I should take this opportunity to thank him in front of all of you, because he had been very helpful to me and somehow to the neon benders I know in my region.
There is no neon bending schools in Lebanon not even in the Arab world I guess, and it never been before. It had been kept secret for many years. I learned neon bending from a man that had very little experience, and even gave me false information, so I added some of my shortcuts and techniques, collected info from books I delivered from US and then corrected everything wrong I used to do.
Internet helped me a lot too, where I found many neon benders talking and sharing in http://www.signweb.com‘s message boards, one of them was Mark. He – and others as well - were big help to me. 9 years ago I asked him about the toxicity of mercury in our business, and he immediately replied with a detailed 3 pages e-mail explaining all about it. After that, I have changed the way I used to handle mercury, and also told every neon bender I know about it. I respect him and respect his work.
Vick from Lebanon
