A discussion with my lawyer today says otherwise. His specialty is liability and insurance cases, and he clearly stated to me that any product that comes out my shop could result in my having to spend lawyer fees, etc to defend myself against a claim.
There is nothing preventing anyone from filing a claim against anybody in the business world these days. While the claim is likely to get tossed out if unfounded, how much cash will you have spent to get it thrown out.
The artisan idea intrigued me so I asked a local lamp maker - he works part time from a home-based studio and assembles custom stained glass fixtures. He carries liability insurance for $5mil because he wouldn't want to be financially responsable in the event one of his lamps was the direct or indirect cause of a fire in one of the houses/mansions owned by his well-to-do client base.
