I just picked up a 1989 reprint of Miller & Fink's 1935 "Neon Signs" while browsing a second hand bookstore.

They show a side-tube method of inserting mercury into a unit and talk about heating the mercury in the trap to boiling with a hand torch while the tube pumps down after bombarding. I can just imagine the mercury contamination in some of the older shops that used this or other questionable practices.

If anyone else has this book, its on page 100 under "The Side-tube Method".
