Not a stupid question at all. If your gas bill has doubled to anywhere close to the numbers you gave, you have a problem (gas leak, inaccurate meter reading, etc.) If you look in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th edition of “Neon Techniques & Handling” there is a chart that gives the average gas consumption of the various burners. From that you can estimate what your hourly consumption is and multiply it by your current rate. Keep in mind that utilities rates in many areas have gone WAY up in the past year or two, so it may be possible that your gas bill has seemed to almost doubled depending on usage.

Also, if your utility company has recently gone to the “radio signal” meter reading outputs (the meter reader only has to be in close proximity to get the reading via remote), this system has been known to transmit false readings sometimes. You can keep track of the meter readings yourself and compare them to what your bill shows to determine if there is a problem with the accuracy of the readings. (Yeah, it’s the old ‘pass the buck and let the consumer figure out if there is a problem or not’).
