Enough inferior products that don't live up to claims will continue to sour the reputation. Another problem is that there is no regulation regarding the claims. Take a look at one of the cheap LED retrofit lamps for general illumination, it will have all sorts of claims regarding light output equivalency and lifespan but there is nothing to back this up.

I'm not anti-LED, but they are not perfect, and there's a lot of poor quality junk out there.
