In Response To: HV Lesson #1 Revisited (Chris S.)

I am sorry to say that many of the shops I have visited have open electrical boxes, exposed leads & strange, non-standard & unprotected connections. All evidence of a dangerous, non-permitted installation.

This is of course due to the majority of systems being installed by unqualified personnel.

I watched as an operator at one shop I was visiting nearly turned on the bombarder and did not notice one of the leads had fallen onto his lap.

On my system, the operator is out of the reach of the clips when they are energized, plus the leads are so short, they must be trolley-positioned directly over the electrode to fasten-short enough the leads can't touch the table either. The HV trans is enclosed opposite the operator end and the supply leads are behind a wall to the overhead trolley connection.

I am not qualified for this installation either, but I tried to do everything I could to protect the operator from shock.

Another 2 cents: A rubber mat, unless rated for resistance to HV, may hurt more than it helps. Some rubbers have conductive materials to shunt static electricity, which is the worst thing to stand on when bombarding. Get a mat that is specifically rated for HV use. It is sold as a tool for electrical work. I have a source for those if anyone wants it. They are not expensive.
