Mark: I think your idea of a collective recyling program is a great idea. In fact, if government authorities are as concerned as they claim about the dumping of mercury in landfills, then they should set up a collection point for the disposal of mercury lamps, whether they come from sign shops, other businesses, or private citizens.

In the city in which I live, there is a place where I can take my trash. They have separate disposal areas for yard waste, concrete, oil, metal, old furniture, computers, plastics, glass, paper, and general trash. But nothing for lamps. And I'll bet the number of lamps disposed in a week in the general trash by people and businesses other than neon shops, far outnumbers what we'd throw away in a year.

The idea of recycling mercury is a good idea. We as neon shops just should not be singled out.

BTW, where can I get info on the hazards and waste involved in LED production. I'd like to pass this on to our sales staff so that they inform our customers when the customer insists on drinking the "LED Kool-aid".
