Since that article ran, I received a call from a customer in Florida who informed me that the local authorities in his area have been gradually making the rounds to sign companies and checking up on disposal methods for fluorescent lamps as well as old neon tubes. Although he is not aware of any neon shops specifically that have been targeted yet (just sign companies so far), he is concerned that it is only a matter of time before neon shops will be paid a visit. An idea that he came up with is to contact one of his good sign company customers who already has a disposal program in place, or will have one soon, and work out a deal with them to take any old mercury tubes to them for disposal with the rest of their tubes instead of having to set up a separate program just for his neon shop. Unless there is some underlying reason why this is not allowed, an arrangement like this should work out well for other neon shops too. It's at least something to consider, because at some point neon shops will be required to dispose of old mercury tubes in an "environmentally friendly" manner - whether we like it or agree with it or not.
