I would agree that you should save your money and invest in a real neon bombarding transformer. Having first hand experience using a single bushing utility pole transformer I can tell you that it was an immense challenge and not safe. First, a single bushing transformer means that you have only one hot lead and the second lead that goes to the other electrode must be well grounded. To ensure good grounding we installed several new grounding rods and ensured everything was bright and tight when it comes to the connections. The farthest electrode from the manifold is where the hot lead would be connected and the electrode hooked up to the manifold was here the grounded lead was connected. God forbid that the grounded lead slip off during bombarding since the arc had no here to go other than into the grounding point of the manifold – dangerous. Further, you can only process one tube at a time since a two tube arrangement will not work and just yield flashback. Also, with the single bushing set-up one electrode would get hot and the other would remain cold, so it as almost impossible to get both electrodes hot equally. Avoid the single bushing transformer!!!!! I can not stress this enough!

In hindsight, we used the single pole bombarder as a shop starting point and we were lucky that is was not dubbed a widow maker – I am being serious. The price of a new bombarder or a correct bombarder for the neon processing application will in the long run be a much better decision for overall use, ease of operation, and safety. Be smart and spend some money, do not become a statistic.

Thanks - GB
