Bob, the only time you inject mercury is when you use argon gas. Mercury in neon pumped tubes will change the color from a shade of red to a sometimes paler shade of the actual tube coating. The tube will take on the actual color after the tube has been turned on for a period of time, after turning tube off, the off-color will return until the tube has warmed up again. Leaving the mercury out of a flourscent coated tube when using neon gas will give amber in green, rose in blue, peach in turq. and coral in white. This is how we get various shades of red, for a broader color spectrum. Neon 101 for today! Hope this has been a help to you! Don
