Setting up fires, and other newbie questions

I've been lurking here for a bit in the process of soaking up everything I can about neon in my quest to pursue a lifelong dream of making some neon. I'm the persistent type who rarely gives up on anything and from what I can tell, I'm gonna need that. Also let it be said that I'm not looking to make money from this venture, I'm not trying to compete with any of of the others doing this, I just wanna have some fun, bend some glass and make some light :) I have most of the processing equipment from other mad scientist experiments, so now on to the hard part.

Anyway, to begin with I've built a cannon fire with a pair of BMT-7 tips, using natural gas and a homemade mixing venturi. I figured a good place to start is to get the fire set up right to eliminate that as a variable so I'm looking for suggestions as far as distance between the torch heads, lighting, and adjusting the flame, and any other tips. Also this may be a stupid question, but should the fishtail flame be oriented horizontally or vertically? I've found very little information on these basic steps despite hours of pouring over forums and websites. I have some 13mm and 15mm glass to play with and am hoping I can make some basic bends and welds with this setup. I have the book Neon Techniques and have read it twice, much good info but it left me wanting much more. Any other books I should pick up? Are any of the videos out there worthwhile?

Thanks guys.
