Caitspa,
I see your point but in all honesty Eurocom are a business and as such their bottom line is to make money as yours is. LEDs are in demand, so the market dictates supply. A company that does not move with the times will cease to be a company sooner or later. I see signage that is made with neon that shouldnt - LEDS would have been better and i see signage thats made with LEDS that sucks. LEDs arent nailing the coffin down its the sign industry itself. I cant comment for USA but here neon has somewhat of a bad name - why??? Because of the misuse over the years, so the market seeks an alternative. Thing is that the same people who screwed up the neon some years ago are now screwing up LEDS.
No doubt Eurocom have asked themselves " are we a neon supplier or an illumination supplier?".
If a customer comes to you with a job that you honestly think would look better with LEDS are you going to ignore your thoughts and sell them neon instead??
Ive been making neon for over 20 years and in ALL that time there hasnt been one signmaker ive worked for that hasnt wanted to get rid of the neon guy if he could. Simply because its the only part of the industry that he cant do himself - he is forced to employ someone. That someone has at times not turned up for work, demanded rise after rise and basically held the boss to ransom.
So when a potential alternative comes on the market its no wonder they all jump to use it.
Yes LEDS are a bit of a worry - yes im losing work to them, but are they proving the test of time?? - NO. They are being used here in Australia, can you guarantee them?? well, yes if you like a gamble - youre lucky if they last 6 months. They are also what i like to term "low impact lighting" - spend $$$$'s for something that doesnt quite come to the mark.
Just keep making good quality neon, with correct installation and youll stand the test of time. Go down the route that some have here in reply of cheap crap glass from China with Chinese electrodes and we dig a bigger hole.
Eurocom and every other "neon supplier" are just moving with the market. Supply/demand. Advise your customers honestly, do your job correctly and well all be here in another 20 years. Let em have thier LEDS, walk round your area seeing half lit letters and smile - the jobs coming your way next time.
