In Response To: Re: Eurocom Hg electrodes (Bobby)

Here it is in a nutshell……

It was about two years ago that we struck up the HG+ deal with EC at a sign trade show. The deal was plain and simple – purchase a total of 10 boxes of HG+ electrodes and EC will lease to us their “Proprietary” induction coil (device used to “pop” the mercury capsule). We promptly shook hands with the salesperson and were told that their induction coil was back ordered, delayed in customs from Germany so we would have to wait a few weeks – no big deal we thought. The verbal contract was sealed.

In the meantime we secured a subcontract account to make several sets of channel letters and purchased 5 boxes of EC HG+ electrodes. We were assured that our purchase of 5 boxes would count toward the required 10 to fulfill the free leasing option for the induction coil. The company that subcontracted us to make the letters use to be a EC user and use to have one of their induction coils. We purchased 5 boxes and produced the neon. About 2 weeks later the phone rang and we were told the induction coils had arrived. Here is where the dispute begins.

We went down to their office in Texas and tried to purchase the 5 remaining boxes. Since the sales person was out we were unable to get the induction coil so we waited. We promptly got in touch with the salesperson and NOW we were told that we would be required to purchase 10 boxes all at once in order to abide by the terms of their contact. The initial 5 we purchased were null and void. As you can imagine we disputed this new found claim and the issue was escalated to the office manager.

The office manager would not listen to anything we had said and told us that the salesperson was not authorized to make such a deal – all 10 boxes must be purchased at one time – no exception. As tempers flared she shrugged us off accusing us of not purchasing enough materials in the past to be considered a “good” customer and that this induction coil would better serve a larger revenue generating company – in other words it may be purchased by a customer who would use more electrodes than we would. Mind you we had just purchased almost 1 ton of coated glass from them – but that is insignificant in their eyes, and we had been a electrode customer for a few years. Based on the rudeness and insults from the office manager we declined any further electrode business with EC. We were directly told by the office manager that their salesperson did not have the authority nor was empowered to make us the offer.

We mailed off the remaining 100 electrodes to a friend of ours who used their system. As you can imagine we found a new supplier of electrodes and we have been treated like gold ever since. We dearly miss you Tom Fling!
