I have seen electrodes without any mica produce the same result, and I have seen Masonlite electrodes with the discs be literally eaten in half from sputtering and the mica disc was still intact. The graphite-like powder for the most part is disintegrated metal (iron and nickel plating) combined with the carbonized emission coating
