You mentioned excess grease. Is this a greased stopcock manifold? If so, did some of the plugs and barrels get mixed up? If they did they may not seal good. Plugs and barrels on greased stopcocks are "matched", meaning they are lapped together so they make a perfect seal when properly greased.
