manometer gauge?

Volunteered to help someone set up a manifold and I'm blowing it. Seems everything is pumping down but there is too much dancing in his manometer gauge...stopcock seems tight but occasionally gauge rises on the right! He has an older gauge that looks repaired in a few spots with some excess grease floating about. Could this be causing it or do I have a leak somewhere? The trodes are getting hot too quick but like I said everything pumps down okay...until the fill. As soon as I close the manometer stopcock the rising begins.
