griffen glass cutter

after speaking to some of you guys i was advised to buy a griffen cutter, which i did , and am impressed. i have just one difficulty though , which is when cutting a splice into a curve im finding it to be hard to break off and when i get it apart it then cracks along the curve ,always on the face. is this to do with my bronze screen , which im new to aswell. should i be breaking the scrap off or thermal shocking it, if so what with , i have heard off a tungsten pick, what do you make these out off? any suggestions?.
