overprocessing

Im having trouble with neon prod electrodes - or my bomvbarder - one of the 2.
Im using 15mm 80's but they seem to have a sooting inside the ceramic collar once pumped. procedure as follows;

at 3mbar strike tube - hold at 200ma
at 150c raise to 300ma @ 3mbar
at 200c pull down to 1mbar and raise current to 600ma
tube reaches 230c - shells nice and red
even lowering the current throughout the process has the same sooting effect. Im using an old Masonlite bomber with the 10/20kva switchover.
pumping on 10kva still has the same sooting - just takes longer!

any suggestions???
